We’re proud to offer exterior staining as part of what we do. With so many homes in our area featuring wood siding or Hardie Board, staining has become a real part of our work — and it’s one of our favorite services to offer, since it lets the natural wood grain stay visible instead of disappearing under a coat of paint.

What we stain
Wood siding and Hardie Board siding are what we stain most. We can also stain decks, and in some cases fences, if that’s what your project calls for.
Our approach to prep
Staining relies on absorption — the finish has to soak into the wood, not just sit on top of it — so prep matters even more here than it does for painting. On wood that’s been stained before, our process typically starts with a specialized wash to strip away any old stain that’s peeling, chalking, or breaking down. From there, we take a close look at the wood and, where needed, follow with a second treatment to address any mold or insect activity. Everything gets rinsed clean, and any scraping or sanding happens at this stage too. Then we let the wood dry fully before applying any stain — rushing that step is one of the most common causes of stain failure.
Hardie Board siding is a more straightforward process — it mainly needs a thorough wash before we apply a stain made for that surface.
Repairs before staining
We don’t do carpentry work ourselves, but we’ve worked alongside trusted carpentry partners for years. If your siding or deck needs repairs before staining, we’re glad to connect you with people we trust to do that work well, at a fair price.
What to expect
Staining is real, hands-on work — the prep alone can take as much time as the staining itself. It’s applied entirely by hand with a brush and roller, never sprayed. It’s not the fastest or cheapest project out there, but done right, it’s one of the most rewarding — your wood keeps its natural character instead of disappearing under a coat of paint.
Every piece of wood is a little different, so the specifics — which prep steps your project needs, which stain makes sense for your siding or deck, and how the process will go — are things we’ll walk you through in person during your estimate.
